Around The World Tour / Beverly Hills, CA

February 6th at the Coffee bean in Beverly Hills California
I am reminiscing to myself which is starting to happen more and more as I discover old bits and pieces from my musical past.
This is a ticket stub from one of the last concerts by Pete Novac and the Heartbeats, soon to be renamed Herman and The Hermits.
Looking at the stub, I am grapefruit that they at least spelled our names correctly, and that Billy J. Kramer never saw the stub. He is one of the original greats from those early days in Lancashire and is still a fabulous entertainer and excellent bloke who I choose to call “friend”. I wish we played more concerts with him?
I may start coming to the Coffee Beans if Starbucks becomes a wine bar. I don’t like the noise that wine drinkers make and enjoy Starbucks as my respite from drunk people.
Any takers for Coffee Bean over Starbucks?
I am over lattes too and I think the food is better in the Coffee Bean.

Early Touring Days

There’s a place near my house that has coffee milkshakes.
I love all things coffee……and I especially love that in the right hand corner of that ticket stub it just says “Next week…the Beatles” !
I love Starbucks and I’ve only found two places I would say the coffee is better or as good as Starbucks. One is Coffee Bean and the other is a small independent coffee shop in South Lake Tahoe.
Costa Coffee for a while?
An M.G.???? (but not too sure of Model number or year…is it in its ’40′s?) Kinda looks small gangsterish-type!
Oh yeah, with…with…with…THAT’S YOU!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Just recently I learned I could have a Frappaccino, with NO coffee, but ALL SORTS of flavor, i.e. chocolate, peppermint, caramelle, vanilla bean, etc….and STARBUCKS to wine????? There go my Frappaccino’s…I reckon that in CASE case, I’ll just stick to my Dr Pepper’s even though changing too (but not too much.) I detest coffee.
Kind’a reminds me of a re-run of “Frasier” I saw last week…….Frasier and Niles are looking for a new coffee shop as theirs has added alcohol to the drink menu………..also, live music has been added to the venue……so it is impossible to talk to each other or even think………the funny thing is, that the scruffy lookin’ musician there to entertain everyone is none other than Elvis Costello!!
ps. Baby you can drive my car……………..
Peter,
I’m not familiar with the coffee bean. But I will join you for a Star Bucks. You just name the time and place.
Wait! The steering wheel is on the left….slide over :)
I don’t drink much coffee, but I like Starbucks Peppermint Mocha at xmastime and an occasional Green Tea Lemonade the rest of the year. Have never been to a Coffee Bean.
Wish I still had the ticket from the Rose Bowl concert on 8/7/65.
So cool you played at that venue the week BEFORE the Beatles! I’ll stop going to Starbucks if the ones here become wine shops.
Hey Gill! If I could, I would…be following this tour in the UK. For those who are able and free to go to these wonderful concerts…please give us pions some reviews!
May 4th 1963……nice to reminise….. six bob to see 3 great groups perform on the same night! I see the Imperial Ballroom sported a licensed bar – of course, most of the band members would have been too young to participate in the wine there! Did Pete Novac enjoy his coffee at 14 years old?
May 4th 2012…..Aberdeen Music Hall Scotland, tickets £27.50! See you there!
I didn’t realize that Starbucks was about to become a wine bar as well…and in all fairness I must state that one or two glasses of wine does not necessarily=drunk. However, having said that, I realize that: 1)some may not have the necessary inner clock that says..”that’s enough, no more now” and 2) granted, the level of noise could rise up a tad in such an environment and most people who go to Starbucks now are used to a certain level of noise which appears be conducive to working on their laptaps or studying, etc. Also, wine bars, in my opinion, ought to be entities in their own right as should Starbucks, in its own right remain as a place for coffee and a nosh and a natter. Btw, I am very curious about the Coffee Bean and would like to seek one out in my area.
I’ve never heard of Coffee Beans (the restaurant) before now, and I don’t go to Starbucks. Caffeine makes me jittery so I stay away from it… except occasional chocolate which I just can’t resist! Wine at Starbucks?? eeeek!
Love the ticket stub! After seeing the video of you, Karl and Keith (PN & the Novaks?) singing “Fortune Teller” at the Cavern I can see why you were the top Manchester group, and very soon to be one of the top British group in America!!
May 4, 1963 wow-that was 12 days before I turned age 11. I was still watching cartoons. Little did I realize that would all change the following year. I missed alot because I was a little bit younger. I’m not a coffee drinker but I like starbucks for their food and strawberry smoothies.
Hello, don’t know whether you take the time to respond to any of these postings; but my favorite song of yours was always “No Milk Today” . . . to me, it always conjured up images of the back streets of revolutionary Paris (maybe I had recently read A Tale of Two Cities when the song came out) . . . Marie Antoinette and her Louie having just been guillotined, partly for her supposed remark to the starving masses that they “eat cake” . . . and, of course, what best accompanies a great piece of fudge cake but a cold glass of milk . . . if its been delivered to your door, that is . . . What enticed you to record this song (besides the fact that it has a great hook)? What is the backstory?
Did we ever figure out what kind of car that was? :)
Don’t you just look ritzy in that showy auto, Peter! Since the addition of wine appears to be in a few stores in Seattle, Portland, So Calif, then expanding to Chicago and Atlanta, it won’t stop me from getting my favorite bag of Starbucks house blend when I want. If they expand offering wine in my area, I may re-consider. I prefer sober people too. Me thinks you 15 yrs old on 5/4/1963? wow! Your fans love you.
Love the car, the guy looks pretty cool too!
I agree wine bar not in a Starbucks, that is a no, no!
Peter i love your stories of your past very interesting.I agree i will ditch StarBucks if they bring the wine bar in .I go there too reax not for loud noise drunk people make not a good idea.Coffebean is fab and much better food.
We had a Starbucks in the Hospital where I worked. I thought their coffee was too strong and expensive so I thought I’d stick with my morning Folgers. I haven’t been in a Starbucks in years so IDK what they are doing. I never thought of wine in a coffee shop unless Starbucks thought winos need coffee to sober up,et drunk and sober up in one place. ha
Glad they spelled your name right too.
Hi Cutie….
Definitely a bad idea to start selling alcohol in Starbucks I think! There are plenty of other places to go for that. We go to Starbucks for a peaceful atmosphere and a quiet chat, and also to avoid the drunks! Glad they have no plans to start selling it in the UK. We used to have Coffee Bean in a few places here a few years back, though haven’t seen any for a long while. We have Costa Coffee in most towns, who do great coffee and their cakes are more interesting than Starbucks.
Hmmm. Through the power of Google, I just discovered that there are Coffee Beans in my area. I will have to visit one. I bet they will start doing lots of business now due to noonatic power. When I visit, I will wear a Herman’s Hermits shirt and encourage other noonatics to do the same thing.
BTW, I LOVE the car, but the steering wheel is on the wrong side. Hehe! (For those who might not get it, I’m kidding. :)
It’s fun to go down memory lane which you continue to create for your flock and those to be flocked! Coffee bean….hmmm? Sounds good though! Haven’t heard of Starbucks serving wine here in the Midwest, but if they do, I’ll have to get mine by driving through the window, er, I mean drive up window :)

Cool car – is that one you owned, or merely got to pose in?
Wine in a coffee bar? I can’t see it lasting for the long run once the novelty wears off. But given that all the donut houses and fast food places are stealing Starbuck’s coffee market share with competitive coffee drinks, I imagine Starbucks felt this was what they had to do next. Certainly not where I’d go for an overpriced glass of wine, though. I haven’t tried Coffee Bean, but we have Bigby, Tim Hortons and Caribou Coffee here in Metro Detroit, all of which are decent alternatives to Starbucks. However, Starbucks outnumbers all the competition combined in number of locations.
I remember a similar show in ’64/’65 at the Long Beach Convention Center in Calif — headlining Gerry & Pacemakers and Billy J. Kramer & Dakotas . . . with at least 10 acts preceding them on the bill . . . including The Exciters and, way early in the show a bobcat vested/bell bottomed Sonny & Cher! (Sneaked out of the house to attend that concert — against my parents’ wishes).
P.S. Didn’t save the stub because they mashed up the spellings on the names on that one too!
This ticket is dated May 1963. The Beatles, noted almost as an afterthought in the lower right hand corner would appear on Ed Sullivan for the first time 9 months later!
A definite vote for Coffee Bean over Starbucks!! Coffee quality is better, food is fresher, and the teas are WAY better. It’s a local So Cal company (headquartered here). Gotta keep the local economy going!!
I’m with you, no wine in a coffee bar for me either!!! I have all my old tickets stubs from concerts over the years too(mostly yours!!!) & your name is spelled correctly on all of them!!!
I enjoy relaxing w/a nice cappucino at Starbucks and was not happy to hear about the wine bar idea. The Coffee Bean – in Beverly Hills? Oh, yes, please!
Both you and the car look fab, BTW. And very cool ticket (even w/the lousy spelling). I like the small print in the bottom right corner: Next Week: The Beatles :-)
I love Coffee Bean…I go there when I visit California, since they haven’t moved to Texas yet. I had heard Starbucks would have ‘juice’ ….didn’t know it would be the fermented kind! BOOOOOO!!! I better use up my Starbucks card quick….
I make my espresso at home nowadays…I don’t get out much! lol….dangnabit…I need a concert!!!
I stand corrected….they have come to TEXAS!….(Austin…but that’s a start!)…hopefully they’ll open locations in DALLAS!
Peter,
I looked up Coffee Beans on the internet as I have never heard of them. There are only 4 in NYC. One thing about Starbucks is that they are everywhere. This might pose a problem for a whirled traveler like yourself. Personally I like Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. I wonder if Starbucks were to rethink their strategy if they saw your blog. Let’s hope the economy improves so they don’t have to resort to that.
It’s amazing the great stuff you have saved over the years. Thank you for scrap booking all this incredible material so we can all reminisce with you.
Love that car!
Gail, Coffee Bean is popping up all over the place. I saw one in Tel Aviv last year!!
Nice Car! I don’t drink coffee, only tea, and not in the expensive shops so go wherever there is great coffee. Be weird to drink wine in a coffee shop.
I never heard of a place called Coffee Beans in WI. I sure hope that Starbucks does not become a wine bar. What about Caribu. I just had coffee there this afternoon and it was good and really quiet in there. Not as loud as Starbucks.
Very cool stuff. It is quite disappointing that Starbucks would do that, as it is also a place for some people to do work on their computers and relax with a nice cup of coffee or a cappuccino. With the wine drinkers, it’s going to be quite interesting having people try to work.
