Herman's Hermits Starring Peter Noone

Rare Photographs from the Black and White Era

Eric Burdon and Herman at the Cromwellian in London c 1965

At the time I was teaching Eric how to drink Scotch and Coke and play a game called “Cardinal Puff”, which he never quite finished.

For the record, I think Eric Burdon was, and still is, one of the top 3 singers form the British Invasion, and we both recorded our hits in the same Kingsway London bank vault.

This rare picture was sent to me by my friend Harold Bronson, one of the original owners of Rhino Records, whom I met many years ago at the Westwood Store where I spent many happy hours adding to my record collection, and discussing music and even trends.

I love your pictures and stories and the animals sure are one of the best from the British Invasion but the Hermit’s are the best

My very first live concert was a double bill–Herman’s Hermits/Eric Burdon & the Animals in Milwaukee on July 31, 1966. I was so excited to be going and enjoyed every second of it. Peter was my all time crush! In fact, my husband’s name is Peter and our only child, a son, was born on November 5th, Peter’s birthday; that’s how big a fan I am ;o) I saw Peter again about 20 years ago and needless to say, I had a ball. I’ll be seeing him tomorrow (August 8, 2012) 46 years later after the 1st time. Getting excited.

Love the black and white. There’s nothing like black and white photos and movies.

I started my record collection when I was 10 at Murphy’s 5 and dime buying Herman’s Hermits records. Still have them all. I saved up my allowance and baby sitting money to buy them.

I understand I group is touring the UK as the Animals only it is without Eric Burdon. Only member of the band I remember as the Animals is Johnny Steel. Sound familiar?

Read your “Dear John” comment on Facebook and was mightily impressed . . . . you are certainly a master of the smooth putdown!

It looks like a pilot’s jacket Eric is wearing… One of my favorite songs by the Animals was “Sky Pilot”. It kind of hits home for me, if you know what I mean. I love seeing pictures of you and other musicians of that era. Great picture!

Drinking Game: Cardinal Puff Add to My Games
You start off with a full beer…..by the end of three rounds you will be done with the beer. It works best with bottles.
      First Round:
I dedicate the first drink of the night to Cardinal Puff. Tap table once with one finger (both hands), tap table underneath once with one finger (both hands), snap fingers once (both hands), pick up beer with one finger and thumb, hit the table with bottle and then tap bottle in the air, then DRINK as much as you can.

Everyone in the circle repeats until finished with that round. If anybody messes up in this round they must finish that beer and start with a new one.

      Second Round:
Everything is done twice….I dedicate the second drink of the night to cardinal puff puff, two taps, two snaps, two fingers on beer, two taps, drink as much as you can.

Everyone repeats in the circle until the round is finished. If anybody messes up then you have to finish that beer and start over.

      Third Round:
Everything is done three times, I dedicate the THIRD AND FINAL DRINK of the night to cardinall puff, puff, puff, three taps, three snaps, three fingers on beer, drink the rest. Suck the foam out cause if one drop hits your head when you put it there….you have to start over. Pour bottle on top of your head and say “Once a cardinal always a cardinal drink to the last drop!”

Now during the course of the evening if anyone asks you if you are a cardinal after you have finished playing this game your answer is “you bet your sweet ass I am a cardinal”. If you don’t respond correctly then you have to finish a whole beer on the spot.

(and this answer comes from a non-drinking teacher)

Well done, Shelley…I don’t think that even my English relatives could be so precise in this explanation:)

Although I LOVE color pictures but I feel the black and white ones have so much more character. I got to see Eric along with you Micky Dolenz and Three Dog Night at the Moondog in Cleveland in 2005 great concert. I have a feeling I am leaving someone out maybe you know. As you said in a post above OLDIES BUT GOODIES AHHHHH those OLDIES BUT GOODIES are going to LAST a long time for me:):)

Yay, you’re back! So, it was YOU who led Eric Burden into decadence (and The House of the Rising Sun)! My early memories of Eric Burden and The Animals was at LAX, during the summer of ’64. I was 13 and ALL of my friends had tickets to see The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl in August . . . . and I was being dragged back to NYC to visit family instead. Needless to say, I was not looking forward to the trip, as no one was willing to attend the Shea Stadium concert with me . . . . however, much to my joy, The Animals happened to be booked on the same flight to NYC (which, at least made the flight more interesting) and, to pass the time while waiting for the flight to board, I remember the group members (in their sharkskin suits and ties) commandeering metal luggage carts to give each other rides as they scattered the crowds and generally terrorized the airline terminal. The summer mostly went downhill from there; however, I did see The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl the following summer!

“Lights that flash in the evening…I can’t hardly wait”–just quoting a few lyrics from MN’s Paul Westerberg. Wait we must, but I’m with you, Terry: looking forward to the weekend in Tower.

When I first saw his show in the late ‘90s on a balmy Fargo night, Mr. Burdon (who looks a little like Keith Moon in this pic) was dressed like Jimmy Buffet: Hawaiian style. Mr. Sky Pilot seemed to be in love with the perfect summer eve…looking up in the sky and singing to the stars with that heavenly voice. Interesting that his patch reads: airborne!

You should gather your black and whites and use them to illustrate your autobiography. This is fab stuff. Or perhaps it’s time for volume II of your photo book?

I was thinking about his autobiography too, Alice. :) I’m really looking forward to it – and good things come to those who wait. (I think that’s how the saying goes. LOL!)

When I was 5, I thought back in those days everything was black and white. I remember asking mom “when did they start coloring everything?” lol

You and Eric Burdon are my 2 favorites. Mom had a record collection “top hits of the 60s.” My bro and I listened to “house fo the rising sun” over and over. I didn’t realize until a few years ago watching a clip on Youtube how young he was with that voice…
