Herman's Hermits Starring Peter Noone

ELVIS PRESLEY and HERMAN in Hawaii on 360 day World Tour

In Hawaii on a day off from a 360 day World Tour, a dream came true for this boy Peter Noone.

Not many 17 year old boys got such amazing opportunities, but here I found my self shaking hands with the greatest singer of my generation. He was totally charming, amusing, friendly and funny. None of the things you heard about Elvis from his merry band of hanger-onners prepared me for his humour and quick-witted repartee.

What a thrill to meet such a giant of music.

Of course what I should have said was “I have every one of your recordings and so does my big sister Denise, and we think you are so much better than all your competition that people will be singing your praises for ever” but what I said was “When are you coming to England?” and from there it was all down hill in the art of conversation.

He remained charming and amusing but I could tell he was just trying to put me at ease, knowing that I didn’t have a bunch of lads with me who would guffaw at every single thing I said.

The DJ Tom Moffatt from KPOI in Honolulu had set up the meeting and I still don’t know how to tell him thank you, other than to always leave him in the photographs.

Thank you Tom!!

Thank you Elvis for being a gentle and gentleman!!!!

I wanted to leave this comment on your most recent post; but, for some reason, the site wouldn’t take my comment (hmmmm, could you be fed up with them??) . . . . so, I will post here . . . .Glad to hear that you’re taking steps to maintain your health. That’s the most important thing in the world and its all up to you (one good place to start might be at lef.org– they have lots of info.) I know I, personally, am hoping to stick around for another good 60 years and the future would look much bleaker if you aren’t here to drool over (voluntarily, not in a nursing home)!

Peter, you autographed my Heartbeat Magazine after your performance at Point Lookout, NY. I said “You sounded great tonight” (of course, you always sound great!) and you gave me a lovely handshake. I’ve seen you several times recently including BB Kings, Fairfield, Ct, Mohegan Sun, Manalapan, and looking forward to the Westbury show in Oct. I’ve seen many concerts, including The Beatles at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in ’64, and at Shea in ’66, and get this, I even saw Jimi Hendrix open for the Monkees at Forest Hills in ’67 and Elvis and Cream at Madison Sq Garden. Thank your for still touring and making my love of concerts continue. By the way, complements to your tailor. Your clothes fit perfectly!

Elvis was worried that people wouldn’t remember him. Hard to believe, I know, but he was a very humble guy. Also extremely funny. Too bad he’s not around now to perform with Peter, can you imagine those two guys onstage together?

I just listened to that little clip of you telling your Elvis/Jackie Wilson story on The Dennis Miller Show . . . . and I would like to take back my earlier snarky comment. I really should work on overcoming my innate, knee-jerk bitchiness. Charming, funny story!!

Maybe you should take that relationship slowly or you may be coerced into some kind of “shotgun” wedding (I’m sure Ted has a supply at the ready) . . . good reason for you to stay out of Illinois, Massachusetts, NY or any other state liberal enough to allow one.

It was awesome to talk to you yesterday on the Dennis Miller show, and I loved the whole show…you make a lot of people dreams come true, just seeing you in concert, especially for the first time, don’t know how you do it all, just I want to thank you, for being you….Thanks for my first concert, autographs,
etc, and photos I was able to take.
    You are special…
I wanted to ask, but didn’t want to take up air time,
What do you and your wife do when you have leisure time at home? Walks, TV, go for dinner, movies, or just relax with each other? Hope you have time to answer. Sorry for the long note.
    Love you,
Andrea from the Dennis Miller show yesterday!

I have siblings who are a lot older than me and they constantly played Elvis’ music when I was young, so I literally grew up listening to it and loving it! I was a huge fan! I always wanted to meet him, (Duh! LOL!) but the best I could do was to go to a concert and sit in the nose-bleed section. (It sold out quickly.) When I was about 12, I still liked Elvis, but fell in love with you. Then, I was the one playing music and the house was always filled with Herman’s Hermits music, so my nieces and nephews, and later my children, grew up hearing it. My nieces and nephews still tease their Aunt Roselyn about it, and my 3 grown children LOVE you! :) Elvis and Peter. I LOVE seeing you together! I’m so glad you had that experience!

Just wondering if Noonefest will be rescheduled. My sister and I had planned to attend. She just received a call today from the Tri Lakes Centre saying the concert is cancelled.

Regarding the “Magic Bus” picture . . . . I do see Brian Jones and, maybe an early Bill Wyman (Keith Richards on a bad day?) towards the rear . . . couldn’t have been Herman or any of his Hermits on Peter Noone’s website . . . .

I can certainly understand knowing what you should have said a few hours afterwards; it seems to have happened when I had the opportunity to meet Herman/Peter. Never got to meet Elvis, but Elvis did do a couple of concerts in Sioux Falls and I was able to get tickets to one. This was pre-tickemaster and computers, so I stood in line from about 2 am until ticket sales opened probably about 9am. Other friends I was also buying tickets for did stop by on their way to work to give me hot chocolate and a short break. You do meet the most interesting and fun people when standing in lines for tickets or concert seats.

That made me smile, LaVina! I remember waiting in line for hours at a record store to buy tix to see Wings in 1990. Anything to see Sir Paul! Good memories of meeting other fans and the excitement of waiting for the record store to open! I miss that.

My sister and I sang along to ALL the songs when we saw Herman’s Hermits at Fortune Bay Casino in Tower MN. It was a highlight of my life. Peter even mentioned he appreciated our “singing all the songs and jumping around” when we got his autograph. I saw them in Duluth MN 45 years ago and have loved him ever since! What a TREAT!!!!!

This past Friday night we went to the Chicago White Sox game, and the annual “Elvis Night”. It’s always a great party (besides baseball!), with skydivers before and after, an Elvis impersonator (besides fans dressed up!), showgirls, and of course lots of his music all night, including my favorite song “Heartbreak Hotel” during the fabulous post-game fireworks show. I kept thinking of this picture when you met him. Funny that you should post it now!

Elvis would have turned 77 this year. Elvis was the inspiration for many poor boys to pick up a guitar, learn to play, and do their best to emulate Elvis. He not only survived the British Invasion, his comeback in 1968 (as it’s called) has to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest comebacks ever. The 1968 Comeback Special is an awesome thing to watch and must have been more awesome for those who were there. In a business that requires a lot of ego to thrive and survive, Elvis was a humble, grateful man, spiritually attached to his poor-boy roots. Elvis will live forever in his music. I could say a lot more, but you say it best, because you’ve been at the top yourself, yet Elvis is alone at the top. There is no higher place in entertainment than where Elvis stood. (Yet, I must add, one of the greatest entertainment business decisions ever made, came when Elvis Presley and Colonel Tom Parker teamed up. That day ensured that Rock and Roll was here to stay.) We are grateful, for that gave us you and many others, including four lads from Liverpool.

Elvis beat the odds from the stories I read of him growing up. Dirt poor, bullied, told over and over again he couldn’t sing…but he didn’t give up. :)

    • Herman August 8, 2012 at 12:28 PM

I didn’t know he had been bullied? Being poor isn’t a requirement to becoming tough. Telling people they can’t sing is one of the strangest things. It is NOT a singing competition!
Ask your dad how hard all musicians practice. Even the ones with natural talent still need to practice 11 hours a day!
Elvis worked hard on his vocals. I have tapes of him making mistakes in the studio and he says “Hot Tamale”

‘Hot Tamale’? Spanish version of fried banana sandwich. For many people, telling them they ‘can’t’ do something is direct inspiration to do it anyway.

Yep. He was known as that trashy kid who played hillbilly music. One of his music teachers in school said he couldn’t carry a tune. He showed them. Ha ha.

I read that about the Beatles too. They were told by Decca that guitars were on their way out and they had no future in show business. Yeah right.

Walt Disney was fired from a newspaper job for not having any imagination or original ideas.

I love reading storeis like that. I believe the secret to their success (Elvis, Beatles, Steve Jobs anyone’s) is that they had a passion for something and were very determined and never listened to anyone who said “no you can’t.”

Thank you for sharing your stories and memories of meeting Elvis. I became an Elvis fan when the Aloha From Hawaii special aired. I was fortunate to see him twice in concert, and even was the recipient of one of the gazillion scarves he handed out during his concerts, which remains, to this day, one of my prized possessions.

No doubt all of us here felt the same way when we met you for the first time. I, for one, could not even gather up the courage to go through the autograph line. Wayne bought Cheryl and me a picture and insisted we go through to have it signed. Thank you for being so patient with us and all your fans whom you have made so happy through the years.
